I did mention to Spouse that losing a retainer was a pretty standard trope of childhood. But he never lost a retainer so...
We've been paying her a dollar each time she practices her guitar, and she's saving the money to pay for dog adoption fees. So a portion of that money is going into the retainer replacement fund.
She was Emphatically upset; mostly because she was afraid her father would hit the roof. I mentioned this to him before EG came to tell him, to smooth things out. It's going to be a pain, because she has to go in and have another impression taken, which means she'll miss some of day camp, which means I'll miss some work. Ah, well.
Oh, Dad's okay. I mean, I'm married to him, so I suppose I'm prejudiced. He gets loud when he's angry, but I get nasty, so we're about even. And in any case, he was a very Kind Daddy about the whole thing.
I'm the author of a bunch of books, including five Regency romances, a Marvel Comics superhero novel, The Stone War, a dark urban fantasy in which I blew up my home town, and Point of Honour and Petty Treason, the first two books in the adventures of Sarah Tolerance, Fallen Woman and Private Eye. I've also published a double-handful of SF and fantasy stories.

That's about average for Young. (My retainer arrived when I was 13/14; it took me a month to lose it -- also about average.)
