Beta Girl

So, two weeks ago, Younger Girl had her ice skating competition and won. Granted, in her class there was only one other contestant, but by gum, the girl came in first. Not only that, but this morning when she got to class we discovered that she's graduated from the Alpha to Beta lessons. "Beta is just like Alpha, only you have to do it all backwards." Sort of like Ginger Rogers with Fred Astaire: backward, in heels. Or at least skates.

Oh, you're still alive?

Emily recently won a gold medal (in reciting a foreign-language poem; some state-wide competition) under similarly dubious-looking circumstances. There were only two contestants in her sub-category (Japanese, non-native speaker, middle school), and she took the Gold. But the judges put up absolute as well as relative requirements, and some categories had no winners at all. (The other contestant took the Bronze, which probably galled.)

Like Beta Girl's parents, we don't mention the tiny-field factor when describing her success.

For reasons that I do not perfectly understand, I'm locked out of DM.net. Nic said he'd fixed the problem, and yet, I am cast out of Eden, so here I am.

Beta Girl is the first to note that she was first out of two. Still, like Emily, she was judged according to strict rules (ISI, which I do not pretend to understand). And the Russian judge seemed to like her.
