Literacy Candy

Among the other treats received chez nous today were small boxes of Necco Sweethearts--you know, the little hearts with sayings like "Be Mine" or "Love Me." This year I was pleased to note that I got hearts that said "Let's Read" and "Let's Write." Beats the hell outta "Oh U Kid!"

On Sunday I took the kids to auditions at the Unitarian Society, where in another room the younger sort were making valentines. One of the nice grownups running it had brought in the printout of a photo (probably created electronically, but very realistic) of a close up of dozens of bad-attitude Neccos. NO WAY and GAG ME and BEAT IT and GET LOST. Worth a definite chuckle.

Demonstrating that email and Harry Potter are both good influences. :-)

But are they still as inedible as ever?

Hey, I like them! They're little heart-shaped Necco Wafers. Only the shape has been changed, to suit the holiday spirit.

I've seen the GAG ME and GET LOST versions--a specialty candy store I went into a couple of years ago had tiny boxes of "Meanhearts" candies. I had to buy a box, of course; sadly, they were eaten by the Philistines in my house.
