Meanwhile, in the face of what has happened in Thailand and Sri Lanka, I feel pretty stupid complaining about the state of my roof. The overwhelming size of calamity beggars the imagination.

It's okay to wish youe roof didn't leak, even while grieving.
There is an excellent reason to bitch about the hole in your roof at a time like this: the need to fix it shoves itself ahead of your ability to send money to a relief fund. If the repairs cost $1500, that inescapably reduces the amount you might otherwise had to give.
When we found out what the real problem with the roof was, we immediately celebrated by sending money to the relief funds, on the theory that now we knew it wasn't a whole roof, we could free some money to send now. Once we get a quote we'll have a better idea of how much more we can send.
