Honor Where Due

Can I just raise my glass to Barbara Boxer and Stephanie Tubbs Jones? May I say "Hurrah" to Sheriff Larry Myers of Neshoba County, Mississippi--and "about time," too?

Who am I to be giving out thanks? Just a citizen, is all.

"About time" doesn't begin to describe it. This makes the prosecution of Gen. Pinochet seem like Rush to Judgment.

The thing in the Chronicle article that kills me is the original juror who hung the jury--couldn't convict a minister. "Oh, I know they found the Reverend Mr. Brown with an axe in one hand and a jug of moonshine in the other, standing over the body of his wife, and that there were six eye witnesses--but you know, he's a man of the cloth. I could never convict a man of the cloth."

Me, I would think clergy should be held to the avowed standards of the religion they represent. WWJD? Not kill Freedom Riders, certainly.
